Guidelines for Measuring
Don't mix metric and standard units
Hold the ruler straight against the thing you are measuring
Mark where the ruler ends with your finger, and then move the ruler and start it at your finger. You could also use a pencil instead of your finger.
Make sure you start measuring at zero= 0
Write down each time you put the ruler down so you don't lose track
